Sahuarita Real Estate & Community Information

Located south of the Tohono O’odham Nation lies the town of Sahuarita, Arizona.  Sahuarita is home to over 26,000 residents and has a long and rich history that dates back almost 2000 years.

The Hohokam people were the first known inhabitants of the area and were known for their innovative and extensive use of irrigation.  They were a peaceful people and had extensive trade routes throughout Mesoamerica.  They inhabited the area until around 1450.  The Spanish established a fort in the Tuscon region in 1775, just north of Sahuarita which brought the region under Spanish control. The area then became part of the Territory of New Mexico in 1854.

The Continental Farm of Sahuarita also plays a central role in the history of the town.  The farm was founded by Bernard Baruch, Joseph Kennedy, and J.P. Morgan with the goal of growing guayule, a plant that provides rubber.  This was done in response to a possible German blockade of rubber imports in 1915 during WW1.  The project was abandoned at the end of the war and the farm was sold in 1922 to  Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.  The queen rented the land to cotton farmers, which became a primary crop for four decades. The farm was then sold to Farmers Investment Co, which switched the crops to pecans. The pecan orchard is now the largest in the world with over 100,000 trees.
